Seonbihwa tree, which was the walking stick of the great monk Euisang

The Seonbihwa tree at Josa-dang Building is a common small tree with height of 170cm and lower part diameter of 5cm. However, it is a 1,300 years old legendary tree. The legend is that the great monk Euisang, who established Buseok-sa Temple, planted his walking stick and it became this Seonbihwa tree. The popular belief was that, if a lady who cannot conceive a child would drink tea made with the leaves of Seonbihwa, she will have a son. Accordingly, many women took the leaves of this tree and it suffered substantial damage. At present, there is a 3-layer steel fence protecting the tree. The binomial name of Seonbihwa is Goldam-cho.
